Mindful Play is a series of mindfulness games such as jigsaw puzzles to develop values and life skills by having fun. The jigsaw puzzles can also promote family bonding and are suitable for all ages.
There are two series of mindful jigsaw puzzles. The ‘Clouds’ series promotes loving-kindness and the ‘Guan Yin’ series promotes love and compassion. Each series comes in different pieces and sizes ranging from 20 pieces to 96 pieces.
The 20-piece puzzle has pieces that are larger in size and is catered to pre-school children and senior citizens with limited fine-motor skills. There are teaching aids in each jigsaw puzzle set for parents to discuss values with their children.
Research has shown that jigsaw puzzles develop patience, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in children. For senior citizens, such mind exercises help to starve off depression dementia. In fact, the sense of achievement when one successfully completes a jigsaw puzzle enhances self-esteem and brings joy.
Mindful Play’s activities include competitions for children, and bonding for parent and child. Mindful Play encourages parents who want to increase their children’s social skills to organise play sessions among siblings, relatives or friends. Senior citizens are also encouraged to play regularly and have friendly competitions with peers.
Mindful Play is developed by Venerable Fa Xun who piloted a mindfulness programme in a primary school in Singapore as part of her master’s degree. She has more than 20 years of experience in conducting mindful activities for children and senior citizens.
